Parks Canada shuttles — Moraine Lake (Sun 20) + Lake Louise (Wed 23)
Book nowPrivate vehicles are banned at both lakes and the upper lots fill before dawn — the shuttle is effectively the only access, and peak larch-season weekends sell out. Only 40% of seats were released when 2026 booking opened (15 Apr); the remaining 60% release at 8am Mountain Time exactly two days before each departure.
When: Two-day release: Fri 18 Sep ~7am Vancouver time for the Sunday shuttle; Mon 21 Sep 8am Banff time for the Wednesday one. Be logged in with your date & party pre-selected minutes before.
CA$12.75 adult return (incl. the Lake Connector between both lakes) + a $3.50 online fee

Disneyland tickets + park reservations — and the Oogie Boogie Bash check
Book nowPark reservations are still required in 2026 — you buy date-based tickets, then reserve a park per day. The key fact: Tue 29 Sep is an Oogie Boogie Bash night, so DCA closes early to day guests. Doing Disneyland Park on Tue and DCA on Wed (as planned) dodges it perfectly. If you'd rather attend the Bash, it's a separate ticket that sells out months ahead.
When: This month. Reserve parks as early as you can (up to 240 days out).
1-day 1-park ~US$104–224 by date tier; Oogie Boogie Bash ~US$139–199

Flights — one Qantas ticket home (QF12 + QF516)
Book nowQF12 (LAX→SYD) and QF516 (SYD→BNE) must be on one Qantas ticket so the ~2.5 hr connection is protected and bags check through LAX→Brisbane. On separate tickets a delay is your problem. WS1024 (Calgary→LAX) is confirmed operating daily in 2026 — confirm the exact QF12 departure time when booking.
When: ASAP — fares only rise.

Hire cars — Calgary (19–24 Sep) + LA (24 Sep – 2 Oct)
Book nowSeptember is peak-shoulder; fleets tighten and prices climb toward the date. Almost all major-brand bookings are free-cancellation pay-at-counter, so lock a rate now and re-shop later. No winter tyres needed in September — check the rate includes unlimited km.
When: Now (free to hold).
- 5
Universal Studios Hollywood (Mon 28 Sep)
Book soonDate-based dynamic pricing — a late-September Monday is usually a low tier. Buying online ahead is cheaper than the gate and guarantees entry.
When: ~2–4 weeks out.
1-day from ~US$109; Express from ~US$209
- 6
Columbia Icefield Ice Explorer + Skywalk (Mon 21 Sep, optional)
Book soonRuns through October with departures every 15–30 min; tickets are valid for any departure that day and weather cancellations are refunded, so book your first available day to leave room to reschedule.
When: ~1–2 weeks out.
Combo ~CA$95–140 (dynamic — confirm)
- 7
LA Kings vs Anaheim Ducks (Sat 26 Sep, 1pm, Crypto.com Arena)
Low urgencyConfirmed on the real NHL 2026-27 preseason schedule. Preseason games rarely sell out, so there's no rush — buy anytime up to game week.
When: Any time before game week.
From ~US$103 on resale (likely cheaper via primary)
- 8
Warner Bros. Studio Tour (Thu 1 Oct, optional)
Low urgencyThe best studio tour in LA. Early-October weekday slots are rarely tight, but morning tours book first.
When: A few days out.
From ~US$76 adult
Travel admin & tips
Entry authorisations — do both this week
- Canada eTA
- CA$7, valid 5 years. Apply only at canada.ca/eta (third-party sites overcharge). Usually approved in minutes, but some take days — apply now.
- USA ESTA
- US$40 (⚠️ increased from US$21 in late 2025), valid 2 years. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hrs before departure — usually instant. Both need your Australian ePassport.
Parks Canada pass — daily beats the Discovery Pass
- The math
- 2026 daily admission is CA$12.25 adult / CA$24.50 per vehicle (up to 7). The annual Discovery Pass is CA$83.50 adult / CA$167.50 family. Five days at $24.50 = $122.50 vs $167.50 — daily passes win by ~$45. Break-even is ~7 days.
- Where
- Buy at the Banff East Gate on the way in, or online. You need a valid pass to drive the Icefields Parkway. (2026's free 'Canada Strong' window ended 7 Sep — it doesn't cover these dates.)
Packing by leg
- Vancouver (16–19 Sep)
- Mild, 12–19°C, rain possible — a light rain jacket and layers.
- Rockies (19–24 Sep)
- Anything from 15°C sun to snow flurries in one day. Warm insulated jacket, beanie, gloves, a thermal layer, and proper hiking shoes/boots — Larch Valley can have snow or ice underfoot in late September.
- Los Angeles (24 Sep – 2 Oct)
- Warm, 22–28°C — summer clothes, sunscreen, one light layer for evenings.
Timezones & the vanishing Saturday
- Clocks
- Vancouver & LA are PDT (UTC-7). Calgary/Banff is MDT (UTC-6) — clocks go forward 1 hr flying to Calgary, back 1 hr to LA.
- The date line
- Depart LAX late on Fri 2 Oct, cross the date line, land Sydney the morning of Sun 4 Oct — Saturday 3 Oct simply doesn't exist for you. (Bonus quirk: NSW daylight saving starts that same morning.)
Driving & connectivity — the Rockies
- Routes
- Calgary Airport → Banff is ~1.5 hrs on Hwy 1, easy divided highway.
- Fuel up at Lake Louise
- There's little/no reliable fuel for the ~130 km north to the Icefield — top up before the parkway. Saskatchewan River Crossing's station is seasonal.
- No signal
- No mobile coverage at Moraine Lake or along most of the Icefields Parkway. Download offline maps (Banff–Jasper) and tell someone your plan on hiking days.
Flair Airlines (Van → Calgary) — pay for bags at booking
- Add bags online
- Flair is ultra-low-cost — only a small personal item is free. A carry-on is ~CA$49–109 at booking but up to ~$99–154 at the gate; checked bags ~$44–69 online vs ~$79–84+ at the airport. The airport is nearly double. The carry-on gauge is strictly enforced.
Calgary — US pre-clearance (24 Sep)
- Clear before you board
- YYC has US Customs pre-clearance: you clear US immigration in Calgary before boarding WS1024, then land at LAX as a domestic arrival — no queue, straight to baggage. Be at the pre-clearance hall at least 2.5–3 hrs before the ~2:45pm departure, with your ESTA already approved.
